Today is a great day for Bluephage! The BCorp nameplate is already in the core of our company, the laboratories of the University of Barcelona! We are honored and grateful for the recognition of our company’s purpose, “Safe Water for a Better World”!

B Corp certification recognizes companies that make their business purpose a tangible value to society.

In the case of Bluephage, our purpose is to promote safe water to the entire population, which means increasing water testing by specialized laboratories in search of viruses such as coliphages.

These viruses, which attack bacteria, are the most effective and realistic viral indicators to determine whether water is drinkable or not. In addition, they certify the absence of fecal contamination of the water resource.

Coliphages are not pathogenic, so working with them in laboratories is safe for technicians and professionals who carry out periodic analyses of the water consumers use for drinking, sanitation, and agriculture.

For this reason, and supported by the European Commission and WHO, who strongly recommend the monitoring of coliphages in water analysis, Bluephage aims to help the water industry to streamline the work in the laboratory to practice this type of testing in the most cost-effectively currently available way.

Coliphage analysis reduces the microbiological risk and can be applied in all parts of the integrated water sector: drinking water, wastewater, reclaimed water, recreational water, shellfish, biosolids, among others. By analyzing this parameter, we will improve society’s drinking water safety.

Although it is not publicized, there are still episodes of microbiological contamination in water in developed countries that affect the population. For example, in the United States, it is quantified at half a million infections per year for this reason. In addition, we must remember the 2.2 billion people who do not have access to drinking water and the 4.2 billion who do not have sanitation infrastructures.

Therefore, Bluephage can help to make the world microbiologically safer.

Bluephage also works to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 6, which seeks to achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all; adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all, and end open defecation, with special attention to the needs of women and girls and people in vulnerable situations.
