The Company
BLUEPHAGE S.L. is a biotechnology company specializing in products and services for the analysis of bacteriophages as viral indicators in water, food and biosolids, launched as a spinoff company in 2016 from the University of Barcelona, Spain. Using a patent-protected accelerated indicator test, our microbiological water quality testing products detect coliphages as indicators of viruses that cause serious waterborne diseases. Our product pipeline will offer the fastest and easiest to use coliphage detection method currently available on the market for environmental testing of water.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
The patent reference EP 13382459 was filed.
Bluephage was founded motivated by the submitted EP 13382459 patent that uses E.coli CB10 bacterial host strain to quickly detect and enumerate somatic coliphages. The patent also protects bacterial host strains, which detect total and F-specific coliphages.
Bluephage develops a new paradigm for water analysis: rapid test kits to provide reliable viral indicators for water safety monitoring, a groundbreaking approach to water analysis and a successful transfer of technology.
The patent is granted by the U.S. Patent Office (number 9,932,645 B). Bluephage validated successfully the patented technology by applying it in new approaches at a laboratory scale for detecting somatic coliphages in different water matrices, sludge, biosolids and seafood samples. Bluephage’s patent is granted by the U.S. Patent Office and has successfully implemented it at a laboratory scale to detect somatic coliphages in water and seafood samples.
Bluephage’s patent is granted by the European Patent Office and starts actively developing practical and effective methods for accurately detecting and quantifying coliphages.
Bluephage in collaboration with the University of Barcelona received funding from the European Union through the Agency for the Management of University and Research Grants (Catalan Government) for the AQUAPHAGE project validating the rapid diagnosis of coliphages as indicators of human viruses in fresh or sea water.
Bluephage obtains a funding grant from the Catalan Association of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises to bring its products to the national and international markets.
Bluephage won a call from Fundació Bosch i Gimpera the University of Barcelona’s Technology Transfer Agency to carry out a “proof of concept” of the knowledge developed.
Bluephage receives a Torres Quevedo grant (State Research Agency of the Ministry of Science and Innovation of the Spanish Government) to hire as a post-doctorate its current Chief Development Officer, Julia MartÃn.
Bluephage wins a NEOTEC Project by the Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial (CDTI, Spanish Governemt) to implement their research-based technological project.
Bluephage wins the ACCIÓ Award for healthcare excellence in water management solutions in France. They were also a top finalist at the 23rd Acció Investment Forum in Paris.
Bluephage is one of the 100 start-up by the FAMAE foundation (France) as part of the Water Challenge 2019 competition for preserving and making water accessible worldwide.
Bluephage receives the Seal of Excellence twice from the European Commission for meeting high quality standards in project proposals under Horizon Europe. The Commission encourages other funding organizations to utilize their rigorous evaluation process.
Bluephage wins the Water Innovation Europe Awards 2020, which recognizes innovative water-related approaches, solutions and technologies.

Bluephage wins the Innowise Scale Infrastructure Competition organized by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, (EIT), based on Bluephage’s capabilities to contribute to the problem of water scarcity.
Bluephage launches its Easy Kits allowing for the examination of coliphages using standard methods ISO 10705-1, ISO 10705-2, and EPA method 1642. They streamline the preparation process but still require 12 steps and a minimum of 18 hours for results.
Bluephage starts offering training and consulting to companies on health-related water microbiology.
Bluephage launches the Qualitative Rapid Kit, based on the patented technology for detecting coliphages in less than 6h.
Bluephage improves its BP1604 and BP1604 with regards manufacturing, customer experience and environmentally.
The main changes are:
- The kit contains 5 positive controls instead of 2.
- The biological materials are lyophilised in the cap of the vial and inside the vial there is PBS.
- The MSB and 2XMSA plastic containers have been replaced by glass containers.
A national interlaboratory assay was performed for a comparative study between the Bluephage Easy Kit BP1604 and the ISO 10705-2 and 10705-3 methods validating this new kit with the standardized methods.
Bluephage launches the BPF-SE Fast-kit for Somatic coliphage Enumeration, a new product that will be validated by ISO 16140-6:2019. The kit provides quick and accurate results in just 6, 5 hours, simplifies the testing process, and reduces errors while saving time and resources.
