Barcelona, May 8, 2023—Bluephage, a biotechnology company pioneering the development of the fastest technology to detect viral contamination in water, will participate in IFAT Munich, the world’s leading trade fair for water, wastewater, waste, and raw materials management. The event will take place in the Munich exhibition halls from May 13 to 17, 2024. Bluephage will be present together with the delegation of the Catalan Water Partnership.
IFAT Munich serves as a central platform for innovative environmental technologies and knowledge exchange, with this year’s focus on the Circular Economy and discussions around the European Green Deal.
Bluephage’s innovative technology—the ENUMERA® Rapid Kit —is at the heart of its presence at IFAT Munich. This patented technology revolutionizes the water industry by enabling the detection and enumeration of coliphages in less than 6.5 hours.
This revolutionary kit provides municipal water utilities, food and beverage manufacturers and water treatment facilities with the tools they need to protect public health by accurately quantifying somatic coliphages at 1 PFU/100mL.
Coliphages are a type of virus that infects bacteria and can remain in the environment for longer periods than bacteria. Their presence may indicate the possible presence of other pathogenic viruses in the environment, albeit at lower concentrations. Control of coliphages can prevent diseases caused by pathogenic human viruses.
The Bluephage ENUMERA® Rapid Kit simplifies the detection process with its ready-to-use free-agar technology, ensuring high sensitivity and specificity. Gone are the days of overnight plating and manual reading; this kit streamlines the process, requiring only 20 minutes of hands-on time. Results are easily uploaded to the cloud via the Bluephage® app , and the data is read automatically, offering the closest technique to real-time monitoring in a fully electronic format.
But Bluephage’s patented ENUMERA® Rapid Kit technology’s true power lies in its ability to improve microbial risk assessment. The kit enables more sensitive and rapid detection of infectious somatic coliphages as viral indicators for microbiological risk assessment, making it an invaluable tool from both a public health and regulatory compliance standpoint.
The incorporation of somatic coliphages as a control parameter in water assessment, as will be seen in the European Drinking Water Directive in December 2020, has further highlighted the need for accurate detection methods. The recently enacted Regulation (EU) 2020/741 of the European Parliament in May 2020 mandates the monitoring of coliphages to validate reclaimed water for agricultural irrigation.
Coliphages are crucial indicators of water quality, especially in the context of the Circular Economy, where direct and indirect use of treated wastewater is gaining traction to alleviate stress on natural water sources. Coliphage-free water is considered pathogen-free and safe for consumption, making Bluephage’s technology essential to ensure the safety of water resources.
“We are excited to showcase our innovative technology at IFAT Munich and contribute to the advancement of sustainable water management practices,” says Núria Guilera Grandes, Commercial Director of Bluephage, who will be present during the trade show days in Munich. “Our mission is to provide disruptive solutions that address the pressing challenges facing the water industry, and IFAT Munich offers an excellent platform to interact with industry stakeholders and drive meaningful change.”
IFAT Munich attendees are invited to visit Bluephage at Booth 222 Hall A1 to learn more about the Bluephage ENUMERA® Rapid Kit and its applications in microbial water quality assessment.
